The very best way to get the internet for free is to have a wireless card in your laptop, and go to a library/ coffeeshop /internet cafe/ community center that has an open wireless signal. If you go to the library, you will see a sign posted somewhere; mine has it on the front door. If you don't see a sign, ask the librarian.
